Bio

Caitlin Farmer

I am a journalism major at the University of Georgia with minors in human services and criminal justice. from Watkinsville, Georgia. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family and Luna, my dog, as well as watch documentaries and listen to music in my car. I enjoy local news and plan to one day go into crime and public safety reporting, to cover cases without editorializing them and help inform the public.

During my time at UGA, I have worked at The Red & Black as a writer and news editor. While at The Red & Black, I wrote a story about the return to campus post-lockdown from COVID-19 and students’ struggles with their mental health. The story placed third for best feature story in The Associated Press Fall 2021 Clips & Clicks award. While in my journalism major, I have learned to identify stories needing to be told and find the people who will be able to tell them. In the Social Justice Journalism course I have taken at UGA, I was able to further learn this by finding people and communities who are systemically and historically silenced and shedding light onto their many untold stories.

I am committed to Social Justice and highlighting all aspects of the experiences of those ignored. I will continually assess my own bias with every story I cover and report on them accurately and fairly. I am committed to researching and reporting on stories in a way that highlights, empowers, connects and educates the communities I work in.
