Caitlin Farmer on Drawing Inspiration from Father, Favorite Band

A biography on Caitlin Farmer.

Why it’s newsworthy: Caitlin Farmer’s life has been influenced by people who push her to do what makes her happy, and be the best version of herself. These people have shaped her childhood and are responsible for who she is today.

Caitlin Farmer, a third-year journalism student at the University of Georgia, gives credit to her father and her favorite band, The 1975, for inspiring her to be the woman she is today.

She attributes her love for journalism and reporting to her dad, Shawn Farmer.

“He also loves writing, and so I feel like that’s where my passion for journalism came from,” Farmer said. “He’s definitely just, like, my biggest encourager and has always pushed me to do whatever I want and follow my dreams.”

Farmer spent her younger years in Milton, Georgia, but found it easy to get “lost in the crowd.” At 15, she moved to Watkinsville, Georgia, where she was able to establish deeper connections with people and meet life-long friends.

Farmer has combined her love for journalism and criminal justice upon acceptance to UGA. She names HBO’s true crime documentary series “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” as an eye-opener to this field of journalism, stating that she would love to report on and write about crime in the future.

Farmer’s interests do not stop there. Some of her favorite activities include keeping up with fashion trends and listening to The 1975. Matthew Healy, the lead singer of the band, has taught Farmer much about keeping an open mind to accepting and loving others.

“You shouldn’t just like, judge people right off the bat, you should give everybody a chance before you, you know, form an opinion about them.”
